    Description

Vintage Christensen Piccolo with two headjoints.
    Instrument type: Piccolo in C

    Mark below tenon: CHRISTENSEN & CO. / BOSTON, MASS. / U.S.A. / 1167
32cm in length, 27cm from center of embouchure to the end with C headjoint, 26.2 cm with Db head.
New professional case that accommodates both headjoints. Comes with case cover.
    Very similar to Haynes.
    Granadilla
is in excellent condition, one crack in each headjoint expertly filled and virtually indiscernible.
Professionally restored, this piccolo is in as-new condition.
The headjoint in C plays very nicely in tune at modern pitch, easily playing the highest notes with little effort, nice woody sound, doing everything a fine professional piccolo should do all the way down to low D with a rich full tone.
I find the Db headjoint to be a bit of a compromise. Above high C, it plays in tune, but below that... well, there are challenges. It was a great idea but the scale was obviously made for the C head.
    Your results may vary.
If you play in a band or orchestra with period-instruments, this professional level piccolo is especially is for you.
See my other listing for a Db Christensen flute.
Nils Christensen worked for Haynes from 1900 to 1913 until he started his own company. He may also have worked for Bettoney in Boston as well. Christensen seems to have gone into business for awhile with John Schwelm, who later become shop foreman at Powell, after going off into his own flute making venture.  1913 is also the year Verne Q. Powell joined the W. S. Haynes workforce.
The point is, that this piccolo belongs to a fine legacy of flute making in the Boston area in the early 20th century.
